delight and desire

I have found more often than not that whatever I delight in is what I desire.

Psalm 37: 3-5
"Trust in the Lord and do good;
Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it."

Verse 4 seems to be a favorite.
"Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of your heart."
It seems to me the teachings in 3 and 5 are important components to understanding verse 4.

"Trust in the Lord and do good;Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
When we trust God we are enabled and motivated to do good.
Dwell in the land-this instructs us to be engaged with other people-be salt and light.
Cultivate faithfulness-this takes hard work and time, preparing the soil, planting seeds, weeding, pruning, fertilizing, watching for disease and pests. Rain and Sun. Recognizing and accepting that there are some things you are responsible for and some things are beyond your control. Waiting, patiently waiting for God to bring the harvest.

"Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of your heart."

Is the Lord your delight?
Does your heart race when you think about Him?
Does your soul long to spend time alone with Him?
Do you long to know what you can do to make Him happy?
Is He the One you want to please above all others?
It make sense to me that if He is our delight that He will become the source of the desires that are in our hearts.
Notice I did not say He will give us what our hearts desire, rather He will place desires in our hearts.
There is a huge difference in those two ideas.

"Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it."

When an athlete "commits"  it is a big deal.
He or she publicly announces their decision to become part of one particular team.
Committing our way to the Lord is a big deal.
It is costly.
It means we want to have God as our "coach"-the one who tells us how and when and where to train and we play by His rules.
There may be many who will not understand your choice.
Some who will try to dissuade you at one point or another.
Trust in the Lord,He is faithful.
He will do all that He has promised.

I love the moments when He alone is my delight and I allow Him to place desire in my heart.
I find that happens most frequently when I am living the instructions found in these verses.
