choosing to walk into the dark
A friend shared the following quote on Facebook one day last week. I say "Amen".
"Sometimes the greatest hope we can give to those in suffering
is not the knowledge of the light on the other side
but the experience of being accompanied in the dark"
The most meaningful, powerful, enduring comfort and encouragement in my life (outside of God's presence) has been the result of someone choosing to come alongside me when I am suffering mentally, physically, emotionally or spiritually. Not with an abundance of words-reminders of truth or advice, not with food to fill my belly or a gift to lift my spirit or meet a need. No, the best present has been their choice to be present in the midst of my darkness without trying to "fix" anything. Sometimes it is via a message, card, note or phone call. Sometimes it is a prayer, offered up known or unknown to me. Sometimes it is wrapping me up in a hug, or sitting quietly nearby, allowing me to be the one to break the silence.
