caught in the rain
After dinner Ruth and Kyle put the kids in the stroller
and went for their nightly walk.
I went to Dollar Tree looking for white frames for beach pictures.
It began to rain as I was walking out of the store.
By the time I got home it was raining pretty hard.
I was sure the kids were in the house,
that they had decided to take laps around the park in case it rained.
"Hello?" I called out as I unlocked the door.
I realized I was wrong, they were not in the house
which meant they were probably somewhere between KCU and home.
I could have sat on the couch shaking my head.
I could have sat on the couch and said;
"I hope the kids don't get sick from being out in this rain".
I could have sat on the couch and said any number of things.
But I didn't.
I grabbed their van keys, went back out into the rain,
took a chance on which way I thought I could intercept them
and met them near the University.
They quickly put the kids in their car seats,
Kyle folded up the stroller and stuck in the back of the van
and they chose to finish their walk since they were already wet.
(Fit Bit steps and challenges must be kept in mind at all times.)
Why did they walk tonight?
Because it is a good, healthy thing to do
and they enjoy being together as a family.
Did they intend to get caught in the rain?
Obviously not, but sometimes the unexpected happens.
Did I have to go out after them?
No, I knew they couldn't be THAT far away from home-
KCU is at most 1/2 mile away.
And I might guess wrong and miss them.
Besides, by the time I got to them they would already be wet.
So why did I go?
To demonstrate that I care.
To "rescue" them if they wanted rescued.
To give them an opportunity to get the kids dry.
To say "I love you, you are worth the extra effort."

“This is My commandment,
that you love one another,
just as I have loved you.
Greater love has no one than this,
that one lay down his life for his friends."
I am thankful for the people in my life
who lay down their life and "come looking for me".
Who take action to make sure I am okay,
their concern for me
overriding their desire to stay dry and comfortable
when they know I am caught in some kind of storm.
Thank you for demonstrating that you care,
for going out of your way to say;
"I love you, you are worth the extra effort."
