DST

DST
those letters, and what they stand for, 
were enough to strike terror in my heart 
when my children were young
because their little bodies didn't get the memo-
not in the spring forward
not in the fall back

DST
a small thing, but a big reminder of Bill
and enough to strike a bit of fear in my heart after he died...
it meant I had to figure out how to change the time on all of the clocks
the first time is a blur, I think my kids took care of it
the second and third time I faintly remember struggling through 
last night was a victory, I was done in mere minutes

DST
any change for that matter,
is not easy, especially if you didn't ask for it
last night I went to bed according to the new time
my plan was to get up in time to go to Sunday School 
my mind began to race out of control about everything and nothing
at 1:45 I knew I would not be sleeping anytime soon

as I was trying to decide whether or not to get up and get a cup of tea,
Bigelow's Sleepy Time to be exact,
I heard a familiar sound-
a car door slamming shut
and my heart leaped with joy
and then started racing with my head,
my immediate thought was "he's home!"

DST set in

you see, it was not an unusual thing for me to go to bed,
and lay there listening for Bill to come home from working late at KCU
each time I would listen for the car door to slam,
when it did, my heart would race and my mind slow down,
I could relax, he was home, safe

DST
to put it mildly, I am not a fan
last night as I lay in bed crying after that split second of pure happiness
I focused, not on the fact that Bill was never coming home again,
but rather on the fact that he is already home
it didn't take the pain of missing him away
but it did make me relax, made the hurt manageable

mini rant,
I wish they would do away with DST
it is nothing more than a nuisance and a myth
as far as I have been able to tell,
and I know I don't have a college degree to back it up,
but don't we still have the same amount of daylight after the fact
as we did before the clocks were changed?
