close calls

I was driving along
minding my own business
traveling in my own lane this afternoon
when out of the corner of my left eye I saw him
looming large and menacing

was the guy in the full sized red pick up truck
tired?
distracted?
complacent?
he was definitely drifting into my lane

I was driving along
minding my own business
traveling in my own lane
when right in front of me I saw her
acting like she had not a care in the world

was she lost?
it was later this afternoon
I have never seen a deer on 23
but there she was,
slowly making her way across my lane, not at all in a hurry

I was driving along
minding my own business
traveling in my own lane early this evening
when out of the corner of my right eye I saw him
not quite so large but still menacing

was the guy in the mid sized blue pick up truck
tired?
distracted?
complacent?
he was definitely drifting into my lane

these three potentially life altering situations
caused all kinds of thoughts to race through my head
thanks giving for those who were praying for my safety
thanks giving that I saw them in time to act
thanks giving that nothing was more than a close call

thoughts about how
sometimes it is wiser to yield
than to stubbornly hold onto what is legally and rightfully "mine"

"Never pay back evil for evil to anyone.
Respect what is right in the sight of all men.
If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.
Never take your own revenge, beloved,
but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written,
Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.
But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
Romans 12:17-21
