listen for the whisper
Elijah was a prophet, but he was also a human being, just like us. He took a stand for God and his life was threatened. He was afraid, he ran, he hid. He was discouraged and said "enough, take my life Lord". He had seen others like himself put to death and he thought he was the only one left. God told Elijah:
“...Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper." 1 Kings 19:11-12
I don't know what the fire has turned to ashes in your life
but I know God was not in those things
oh, I have no doubt he was there with you, through them,
but He did not cause them
He is still there and He has something to say to you
when Elijah heard the low whisper,
he went to the mouth of the cave and he listened.
God spoke to him.
I encourage you to do this one thing every day,
especially when the wind and the earthquake and the fire
are looming large and destructive
ask God to open your ears...
and then listen for the whisper of His voice
you will hear words of
comfort
direction
correction
encouragement
you will find your heart and soul strengthened
you will receive from Him what you need
you will experience
His lavish love
His sure hope that is an anchor for our souls
His abundant joy
His peace that passes understanding
***it is written in 1 Kings 19:18 that God tells Elijah there are 7,000 others who have been faithful. He was not alone. Neither are we.
