how far is heaven?

riding home from a soccer game late Friday night
the moon loomed large 
and for the first time since Bill died 
I wondered consciously
"how far is heaven?"

I found myself wishing I could see past the moon, stars and planets
to take a peek at Bill's face to see if it is different in heaven
if that was possible, I would want it to be one way-
so I could see in but he couldn't see out
it makes my heart smile to imagine that

how far is heaven?
the question continues to roll through my head 
and maybe, just maybe,
though it is farther than I'd like,
it is much closer than I think
