who is my neighbor?

I get it
I really do
when people we love are in harm's way,
it affects us on a personal level
we care
we pray
we give generously

what I don't get
is how those who love Jesus (myself included)
can remain indifferent to those who are in harm's way
when "it" is happening to "others"
a cloak of detachment settles on many
a shroud of apathy covers some
an air of callousness threatens to suffocate a few

my heart breaks for those affected by the disasters that are swirling around us
those who have lost loved ones
those who have lost things that can never be replaced
those who are hurting for those who are hurting
those who desperately want to give but feel they have nothing to offer
those whose hearts are not affected by strangers pain
those who are so consumed by here that they have no room for "there"

"For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:6-8
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35

“...Which commandment is the most important of all?”
Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”  Mark 12:28-31

“If you love Meyou will keep My commandments." John 14:15
