COVID-19 impacted grocery shopping 74/366
I haven't grocery shopped for awhile so I went to Aldi this afternoon
I needed some fresh fruit, vegetables and a few other items
I overheard a man tell his wife this was a case of shopping for what you could get
rather than what you wanted
as I looked at the emptying and sometimes bare shelves I had a couple of thoughts:
this looks like the stores Deborah shops at in Salekhard,
especially when the river is in the process of freezing over or melting,
except there weren't piles of fish every time I turned a corner,
fish is the one constant, abundant food supply there
I know hers isn't the only place where limited selection is a normal way of life
I was reminded that we are a spoiled nation, we take our abundance for granted
and we get angry when we are forced to live like a lot of the world always lives
those who panic and have the resources, hoard
those who don't hoard,
panic when the items they need are not available
the people who are stocking shelves are doing their best
they can only put out what they have in stock
the cashiers are doing their best
the people working are tired
many of them also families who need the same things you are buying up
they are not the cause of shortages
treat them the way you would want to be treated if you were doing their job
be kind and patient
share a smile and word of encouragement, I'm pretty sure they could use it
"And the crowds were questioning him, saying, “Then what shall we do?” And he would answer and say to them, “The man who has two tunics is to share with him who has none; and he who has food is to do likewise.” Luke 3:10-11

what does this teaching look like in our current situation?
maybe it means if there are only two items left
and you can make do with one...
you choose one so the next person does not have to do without
sometimes loving our neighbor costs us something
