transitions

I have been pondering this word the last two days
the flooring project is the catalyst for these thoughts
choosing to go from carpet to hardwood was a transition
choosing to go from linoleum to tile was another
going from hardwood to tile calls for three transitions in my home
going from the original section to the "remodeled" calls for another
transitions, if not done well, can cause problems
as I looked at what surrounded me yesterday I thought
"I am in transition."
and I gave myself a pep talk
"You have been through this before.
each time you gave birth, you went through transition-
remember?
it is that time of pregnancy when birth is imminent
when, because you chose labor without drugs, you thought,
'I can't possibly go on, the pain and intensity is too much'
but you HAVE to go on,
you have no choice
and not long after that point
you gave birth
and the horror of transition was forgotten as you gazed at your child
remember, transition is necessary to get what you want"
and so, today,
as I look at what continues to surround me
as I listened to the saw and the air compressor and the nail gun
it is with different eyes and ears
yes, where I am right now is painful and sometimes feels overwhelming
but, I just need to keep breathing, deep, calming breaths
knowing that what comes after will be beautiful
