35/366 making "the list"

1 Chronicles is a history book of the Israelite nation. The first two chapters are genealogies. Chapters 3-29 are about King David's reign. There are a lot of lists. Responsibilities assigned. Leaders established. Sometimes it can be tedious and hard to pay attention. I have been known to skim rather than read. If I had done that when I read this afternoon I would have missed the thing that has been my focus today.

1 Chronicles 27:32-34 is a list of David's counselors:

"Also Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a man of understanding, and a scribe;
and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni tutored the king’s sons.
Ahithophel was counselor to the king;
and Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend.
Jehoiada the son of Benaiah, and Abiathar succeeded Ahithophel;
and Joab was the commander of the king’s army."

"and Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend."

The only friend I remember in David's life was Jonathan, Saul's son who was killed in battle
But here we are, in the midst of a list of those who gave David counsel:
Jonathan (different man) a counselor and scribe
Jeheil, tutor to David's sons
Ahithophel, a counselor
Jehoiada and Abiathar counselors
Joab, commander of the army
and stuck in the middle is
"and Hushai the Archite was the king's friend"

no military glory
no "counselor" identity
no record keeping skills like a scribe
being the king's friend was enough to earn him a place in this historical record
and that spurred me to spend all day considering the value of friendship

this is my conclusion:
being a true, faithful friend is "enough"
having a true, faithful friend is a priceless treasure worth taking note of
be one
find one
