it's more than toothpaste

it's history

it's habit

it's comfort

it's preference

after I wrote about Crest liquid gel the other day 

I received an unexpected message from a VBS student 

someone I've heard from only a few times in forty years

he read my post

he thought he might be able to find some

he interpreted what I couldn't explain  

he cared about me and he wanted to help

he would send it to me if I gave him my address

so of course I gave it to him, thankful and hopeful

a little later in the day he delivered the saddest news

it appears my preferred toothpaste is being discontinued

he could find the white, but not the green

his heartfelt regret and concern was a great big hug for my heart

I thanked him and told him I had already ordered that as a replacement

this is what I ordered,

the only thing he could find,

what I settled for 

because it was the closest thing to what I wanted 

that I could find online and I'd not been able to find it in the store

an early delivery, today instead of tomorrow, was my first surprise

when I opened the box I saw a bigger surprise

the items in the box were not the items I'd ordered

but I don't think I have ever been more happy to receive the wrong thing

because what I received is exactly what I wanted!

I know for many people it's just toothpaste

and some would say this is all just a coincidence

but for me 

this whole thing is not about toothpaste 

well it is a little bit,

but not nearly as much as it is about something more important,

how kindness matters-

the kindness we give and the kindness we receive

how what we do now influences what happens in the future

this is also a testament to God's overwhelming kindness 

His lavish love

and His concern about even the "little" details in my life
